A Few Ny Rail Road passengers are being pressured to trip on a dingy vintage teach with broken air-conditioning — since the more recent rides had been allotted to the pampered Hamptons crowd for the summer season.
“i guess the richer other folks get to have the air-conditioning prior to me,” griped Lisa Ludwig, FIFTY ONE, of Huntington as she boarded the getting older train on the Port Jefferson line.
Northport commuter Judy Roberts, 58, stated that when the teach first pulled into her station, “i was like, ‘what is this?!’ This apparatus is from the nineteen fifties!”
The MTA rented the educate from Maryland’s rail device — Maryland House Regional Commuter (MARC) — and positioned it at the Port Jefferson line so that the agency may move more diesel trains to its Montauk line, in keeping with MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan.
That line serves the Hamptons seashore community, a mansion-riddled magnet for vacationers.
The old MARC teach first seemed on the Port Jefferson line every week in the past, disappointing commuters who are already frustrated by continual delays because of infrastructure problems at crumbling Penn Station.
Proper out of the gate during an excessively sizzling week, the air-conditioning was damaged in some automobiles, forcing riders to either swelter or cram into crowded, cooler ones.
“On best of borrowing trains, we’re borrowing trains that don’t work,” Roberts quipped.
The MTA paid $670,000 to hire the train, Donovan mentioned, including that it’s the first time the LIRR has used any other company’s train.
Donovan mentioned the Port Jefferson line drew the quick straw over the Hamptons for the reason that MARC train carries fewer passengers, explaining:
“Bringing in additional cars — all of which have air-con — lets in the LIRR to provide additional seasonal carrier to enhance Long Island’s essential tourism business.”
